Howe Sound Crest Trail

June 6 & 7 Dino and I hiked the famous Howe Sound Crest Trail from Cypress Bowl to Porteau Cove, 29km, reaching various peaks and landmarks: St. Mark's Summit, Mt. Unnecessary (the highest point at 1,542m/5,057ft), The Lions, Enchantment Plateau - where we decided to camp for the night - heady call Dino - James Peak, David Peak, Magnesia Meadows, Hat Pass, Brunswick Lake, Middle Lake and Deeks Lake. It was a difficult hike with 50lb packs - extra water and food - but well worth the effort considering the awesome terrain and breathtaking views. There were a lot of "goat trails", scrambling up and down rocks, some ropes, a chain, plenty of sections that Dino described as "Nar-nar" ie. "Gnarly" ie. "steep and/or partially exposed" ie. "falling is not an option". Besides millions of flies, a brave and hungry chipmunk was the only wildlife we encountered. From Magnesia onward we only met 4-5 other humans - trail runners. We definitely felt alone in the wilderness. This was an unforgettable adventure with some beautiful vistas - worth doing again some day.
